Synaptic Package Manager saves the day

Synaptic Package Manager saves the day

A few days ago, Ubuntu's Update Manager showed there were a number of QGIS files to be downloaded but I could not do it because they came from an unauthenticated source. Rats! So I tried to update Ubuntu's patch files via the terminal but there was still no changes insofar as QGIS patch files were concerned. Lastly, I decided to go back to my previous lover, the Synaptic Package Manager which I left behind some time ago when the sexy Update Manager came along into the scene. She responded as reliable as always cutting away the red tapes, downloading and installing all those patch files the Update Manager would not. My dearest, Synapatic Package Manager...I have been a bad boy, where in the world would I be without you?

  1. Now QGIS 2.2 is out, with newer gdal and proj4, is the RSO bug fixed?

    1. Well, I have yet to test the RSO thing but I noticed QGIS 2.2 on my 64 bit version home computer doesn't have workable critical plugins like Openlayers plugin whereas the QGIS 2.2. on my 32 bit version office computer have workable plugins. So sad! :-(

  2. I have Openlayers working better under 2.2 than under 2.o on both Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit
One thing to watch on Ubuntu is having multiple versions of libqgis. I find that upgrading does not remove earlier versions and do it manually with synaptic.
I am in Ampang by the way

  3. Hi Abbas, I just started using GIS today. I'm currently using QGIS 2.2 and have successfully downloaded .osm files and exported topology to SpatiaLite. I've managed to get three separate layers for points/polygons/polylines.

I've been reading some tutorials online and have discovered that in order to perform spatial queries, the layers usually have to be more specific than simply points/polygons/polylines.

An example I found online was on spatialthoughts.com where to investigate what cities are within 10 kms of a river, the layers "ne_10m_rivers_europe" and "10m_populated places" were needed.

How do I get these specific layers for Malaysia? I understand they may be quite specific to individual queries, is there any way I can create them?

Also, if you have any free sources/documentations online that explains this I would be very happy to go through them. Thanks. I hope my question makes sense.

A good start will be http://macgdi.mygeoportal.gov.my/208.aspx

Under Menu/Plugins/OpenLayers plugin, activate e.g. Google Hybrid layer. Then create a specific GIS layer depending whether you want it to be a point, line or polygon layer to represent that real world feature. Digitize the features you need using Google Maps as the base map.

The QGIS Online Manual is at http://qgis.org/en/docs/user_manual/index.html

  4. Hi Abbas,

Actually, more specifically, I'd like to create/download a layer that helps me determine where landfills and transfer locations of waste are. So that I can use spatial queries to determine their relative distances.

Thanks very much for your efforts on this site.

    1. I do not know of any agency that offers free, downloadable GIS layers other than QpenStreetMap. But the agency you should contact are DOE (JAS) or a particular local authority since they deals with info you seek.
