About Sexante menjelaskan "It currently contains more than 300 algorithms (Wow!) for both raster and vector data processing, as well as tabular data analysis tools."
SEXTANTE is QGIS's answer to a graphical modeler
I have always been wondering how this module was related to sex when I first saw it but when I installed it, I found out it had nothing to do with sex but happens to be an extremely powerful tool for QGIS. This is QGIS answer for the need of a graphical modeler and in my opinion, par excellent, I take my hat off to Victor Olaya, who at his blog said he decided to do something else though will not totally abandon it. About Sexante tells that "It currently contains more than 300 algorithms (Wow!) for both raster and vector data processing, as well as tabular data analysis tools." I have never used a modeler though understand its concept so took the liberty of printing his 50 page Sexante User Manual from the Sexantegis website. However, Fadzlan who was already trained in the use of the ArcGIS equivalent, tried it out and showed me how it works. He agreed it is a very powerful tool in the right hands. This is one QGIS module that will shoot down the competitors and put them to shame. Now... time to do some reading.
Well, I can mention GRASS wxGUI Graphical Modeler as opponent to SEXTANTE graphical modeler. I don't think SEXTANTE can deal with uncorrected LANDSAT images, GRASS has far more modules to prepare imagery for further analysis.
ReplyDeleteBut I do like SEXTANTE modeler for its simplicity. I tried both GRASS and SEXTANTE modelers, and SEXTANTE's one is better in regard to model creation, i.e. it takes less time to create a model. Maybe in future I'll write a post comparing these two excellent tools in the world of FOSS.

This is good information considering you have already tinkered both of them. To me it's as if someone threw me into the deep of the pool and I'm gasping for air. Anyway, thank you very much...for your interesting blog.
DeleteThe Sextante modeler includes also GRASS modules. It does not includes *all* GRASS modules, but adding the missing ones is a trivial task, so if you think that something important is missing just file a ticket in the qgis bug tracker.
DeleteCould you please give a link confirming your information? I would like to add some modules like i.landsat.acca, i.landsat.rgb and i.landsat.toar. If I succeed in it I'll switch to Sextante.
DeleteThere is no need to confirm the information. GRASS is supported out of the box in Sextante for QGIS. After installing the plugin you'll get access to documentation (trough the "analysis -> sextante help" menu entry) on how Sextante for QGIS works. In the installation folder of the plugin you can easily access to the files (simple text files) used to create the GUIs for GRASS modules (as also other programs like SAGA, OTB, R, etc.). If you want just to file a ticket (bugs or feature requests) use this tracker
